In order to diversify production in the region and help farmers increase production and income opportunities, Emkan established a program for the production and development of the Avocado value chain in Akkar. The program was developed in partnership with the USAID project on the Lebanese Industry Value Chain Development (LIVCD).

Core objectives:

  • Increase income opportunities for farmers, investors and workers in agricultural affairs.
  • Establishment of close cooperation linking expertise and capabilities of farmers with scientific and agricultural principles.

  • An opportunity to cooperate with the LIVCD program to take advantage of practical experiences available.
  • The nature of Akkar climate and the quality of the soil and the availability of irrigation water is suitable for the production of avocados.
  • Avocado tree is fruitful and perennial. Training involved is challenging yet not expensive.
  • Increase in demand for Avocado in domestic and foreign markets
  • Avocado prices and financial returns are relatively higher than those of citrus and olives
  • The possibility of manufacturing and producing avocado oil

Emkan Role:

  • To establish Pilot Orchards on scientific and practical grounds to encourage and expand the production of avocados in Akkar
  • To assist in the selection of seedlings, in order to provide production throughout the year and ensure resistance to frost and strong winds
  • To supervise capacity building for farmers and workers and ensure good practices in orchards management
  • To supervise irrigation and fertilization programs
  • To supervise the fight against diseases and insects and develop prevention programs
  • To assist in determining the appropriate harvest time and strengthening post-harvest practices
  • To assist in the marketing and production
  • To assist in the development of financial reports and follow-up on expenses, income and annual yield
  • To establish orchards with organic production and get the proper certifications

Practical Steps:

  • Visit territories and to obtain the necessary information to establish Orchards
  • Conduct laboratory examination of the soil and irrigation water
  • Identify the types of seedlings
  • Request seedlings
  • Start land preparations: tillage, softening, extending drip irrigation systems, drilling gaps, and providing necessary supplies
  • Supervise the project with a team of Agricultural Engineers through field visits to maintain cooperation with farmers and provide them with the needed recommendations and suggestions
